Just stumbled on your site. What a trip down memory lane. I was born and
raised in Tucson and was a disco hater from the get go. My wife of 28
years still remembers me listening to kw back then. I had forgotten
about the Dixie Dregs. Got to go find my cassette. Thanks again.

This brings back burning pallets and doobies in the desert. After High
school football games. Great site.

What a treat to see this.  Brought back some great memories for me.  I
was the Local Sales Manager from sometime in 1981 through 1983, when I
moved to Sacramento to work for KZAP.  Any one know where Jim Ray is? 
I know Jim Hardy is in Puerto Vallarta.  How about Lee Dombrowski or
Kimberly Craft?

It's so gratifying that this music and time in our lives will live on -
captured here. And what a treat to read notes from fans of the old
K-dub. That was a magic time. Thanks to Dave LaRussa and all who
contribute to make this site possible. 

This station so rocked when I lived in Tucson.  Air Brothers, Straight
Shot, Jerry Riopelle, Bob Meighan,  Dusty Chaps...dancig to this great
music at the Pawn Broker...so home grown and so great.

Holy smokes! I was there for the Lee Dombrowski, Jim Hardy, Nancy
Wilson, Jim Ray days. And I worked with lots of the alumni at KTKT/KLPX
too. I went to Denver with Hardy and later Lee then moved east to Prov.
RI market. I saw Hardy in San Francisco about 15 years ago. We had a
great visit. And where's Kimberly Craft? I saw her in Boston in the
80's. I'm practicing law now but KWFM has my fondest of memories.

Listened to KWFM...nearly...from the beginning. Played a lot of gigs
hosted by KWFM and of course went to a lot of concerts promoted by the
station. A GREAT radio station and a great time in Tucson. And, after
all of this time, I still have my hair!

Lord have mercy how I miss J.Snyder, Allen Browning, Bill Russle, Jim
Brady, and of course, Lee Dombrowski. Tried to get in touch w/Matt
Segal (rockin' in Bean Town) Broadcast life after KW was brief...about
a year @ KAIR, then into publishing (Sale-O-Gram, Tucson Shopper), I'm
sure the 'Shopper still inundates the Tucson area mail boxes on a
weekly basis. Then on to El Paso for another 'shopper', then to Austin,
TX for still another tree destroying fish-wrap. Lastly came auto sales
with Performance Mazda, Desert Toyota, Dave Aufmuth and a couple
others. Mom's illness brought me to Dayton, OH in 1990, where I've been
stuck ever since. Although I did get to break bread w/ AB and talked w/
Jim Brady. I sure miss the area where a person can breathe air without
having to chew it first. If any of you old KWs from the early-mid 70's
catch this diatribe, it would be more than fantastic to hear from you.
P.S. Whatever happened to Diane and Stan Sloan???

I went to high school in Tucson 79-83 & still remember this as one of
the best radio stations EVER! I've worked in the music biz for 20 years
& the world is a better place because of KWFM! Thanks for all the great
music & memories! Cheers

Had a crazy dream last night...was up on the roof of my teenage house
listing to KWFM again. Heard Street Pajama's "Screwed" in the dream.
After getting the morning caffeine, I went straight to the web looking
for that song. Thank Goodness for Google! Found this website and
remembered how much fun I had filling out 150 forms for the 79 top ten
list for rolling stone magazine! I still have three k-dub stickers on
my metal footlocker! Thanks for giving me an eclectic taste in music!
Have added the site to my favorites!

any info on the band.... Air Brothers with Paul, drummer, Chuck Surface
and Donny Roberts, etc......????

I worked with a lot of these bands and was involved in a few of the
simulcasts. I did the in house mix for the Pills, worked with Central
Air [sound] until I got hired away. It's great to be able to get this
stuff back. GOOD JOB and a GOLD STAR to all involved in making this
happen. Thank You.

You guys were the greatest station ever.  Tucson isn't the same without
you!  

Just came across your Bob Cooke tribute page. Man I still miss that guy,
talk about the day the music died! Thank you for this site and for not
turning your back on Tucson's true rock heritage. For those of you who
never had a chance to tune into the greatest rock station that the west
will ever have sorry you missed it!!

Looking back on KWFM and those days ...it was amazing how the station
really helped promote local bands.
Those memories of the desert are still dear to all of us that were
there.
Today, the Air Brothers and Rock Doctor are almost never mentioned at
all yet we lived there many years.

I don't really understand why Clear Channel didn't bring back the KWFM
call leters on Tucson's 92.9 frequency, maybe a few of the old jocks,
etc.  Especially since they play a Triple AAA format now and own the
calls KWFM on 1450 AM.  Seems like the least they could have done out
of respect for Tucsonans and radio fans.

Course in this day and age of corporatism it still wouldn't really
resemble the old KW.  What a GREAT station that was.  A lot of great
memories!

I had the privilege of working with KWFM in the glory days of Tucson
radio.

As Opti-Graphics Visual Productions I was tasked to videotape KWFM
music events, like the recordings of the Westwood Studios live
Homegrown Hour sessions, with Central Air, Bob Meighan (sp), Dusty
Chaps, Jerry Rhiopelle and others.

I also taped the fabulous KWFM 10th Anniversary bash at Old Tucson
studios.

Working with the FM greats like Jim Ray, Lee Dombrowski (GM) and 'The
famous Jim Brady'. We had some cool 'parties' too!! (sniff! ;-)

Anybody remember Mud Wrestling with MODA? Remember that? Choo-Choos? It
was on 'PM MAGAZINE' with Martha Vasquez, sponsored by KWFM!

Tucson is not the same without this station and these talented people.
I would love to find some of the albums that were created during these
sessions, and if anyone has a setlist for the KWFM 10th Anniversary
bash, I'd love to have it!

There was a local band, very talented, with a very HOT female lead
singer... what was her name?? The band was 'Street' something..,. GAWD,
I hate getting OLD!! Help me out here folks!

Doug, that "Street" something would be Street Pajama, and you can find a
song by them in the "KWFM On The Air" album, posted on this site under
the "LIVE!" tab.

I grew up on KWFM ..... Nothing like growing up at the base of the Santa
Catalinas with the warm winds blowin' and Steely Dan, Bad Company and
Santana pumpin' thru on the old Kenwood.  Beautiful .....

I bought a copy KWFM On The Air from 1980 at a garage sale. The first
track, " Tough Customers" by Central Air, has a familiar sound,a lot
like the Steve Morse band, The Dregs. With no liner notes I can't say
for sure. Got any input? Good album though.

Aside from that, we had a progressive station in Cleveland, WMMS, but
they keep changing formats. We do have The Fusion Show once a week on a
college station with Randy Allard hosting for 22 years.

I started listening to KWFM in 1974 while cooking breakfast and lunch at
Dorado Country Club. Listened to Mark Youngs morning show and called in
requests alot. He had us over for a party at his apartment. Was sorry
to hear the next year he died. I'm listening to his recorded dec 1974
show as I type this. This is a great idea and brings back great
memories from a time long gone by. Thanks.

It was so much fun photographing the crew throughout the years. KWFM was
my favorite station. Miss all of you.

year and a half. The San Diego gig went bust after 4 years, and I was
lucky to get my old job back with CBS Radio and be re-united with some

Hey everybody!  Looks like Jim Ray is coming to town for a visit and
that means KWFM staff reunion!  Mark your calendars for November 6th
and contact me or Margie for the details.  Looking forward to seeing
you all there!

Was a Pills fan and Billy Clone and the Same. What happened to the band
members in The Pills, does anyone know?

In 1981 or 82 KWFM partnered with the U of A Flandrau Planetarium to
present "Cosmic Radiance" the first locally produced full-featured
laser light show ever done there. 

The show opening was a panorama of the Tucson skyline with an orange
setting sun, under which the KWFM logo letters faded in. The sun set as
the panorama faded out and then the letters faded out as the music
started. 

I remember going to the KWFM studios every week with an arm-load of LPs
to trade for the LPs for the featured artist for that week's show. We
mixed the show in a small studio in a converted closet covered in
carpet by the planetarium loading dock then took the tape into the
theater to add the visual effects.

I can still see the images from 'Dark Side of the Moon' in my minds
eye. (We certainly played that show a lot!) One of the best points of
my life.

I worked with Perk Clark (who is out of town this weekend) on print ads
for the station for the Tucson edition of New Times in '71 and '72. I
miss the station!

I have been a cartoonist for the Tucson Weekly since '87.

The blue glow of my Pioneer receiver in the middle of the night with the
best music ever to come across the airwaves.  Still remember
Springsteen's version of "Fever."  Awesome.  Great site here, thanks.
